How can I get help with IMFilter?

When you purchased IMFilter, you were automatically subscribed to the support mailing list. To post a new question or comment, send an email to IMFilter@MicroNeil.com.

Can I use IMFilter with an external user database?

YES. IMFilter discovers user directories by looking for them under the domain's USERS directory. IMail will create each user's directory to store the user's mail. Once the directory is created, IMFilter will be able to find it and propagate the .FWD files for that user.

Some of my new IMAP users are complaining of errors?

You MIGHT get this problem if you use the -scrub option in IMFilter.

What happens is this: A user is created in IMail under a domain where global filtering is being used. Before IMFilter can propagate the .FWD files to that user, they might receive some mail that was filtered by the RULES.IMA file. Since the .FWD files weren't in place yet, IMail would create a mailbox to contain the mail captured by the rule such as a SPAMBOX.

The -scrub feature will delete these mailboxes for you as it propagates the .FWD files to each user. However, if the user checks their mail before IMFilter gets to them, their mail client will remember that the new mailbox existed and it will thereafter complain that the box is missing. This is why the -scrub option should be used with caution.

If this occurs, you will have to explain the source of the trouble to the user and perhaps offer them some assistance in removing the errant mail boxes from their client. This should stop the errors.

I've added users to my EXCLUDE.LST file, but they are still receiving the .FWD files. Why?

When you add users to your EXCLUDE.LST file, you must be using the -registry option for processing so that IMFilter can properly identify the domain part of their address. Also, be sure that you have their address and domain spelled exactly as IMail has it.

Pay special attention to the domain. For example, if your server is mail.uglydomain.com, and you have an alias set up for uglydomain.com, then to exclude joe@uglydomain.com you must add Joe@mail.uglydomain.com to your EXCLUDE.LST file. This is because to IMail, the domain is mail.uglydomain.com so that is how it will store the information in the registry.

Hint: Many folks prefer to set up their IMail hosts using the primary part of their domain and create an alias to the host name. For example, the domain MicroNeil.com is the primary, but we have an alias for mail.MicroNeil.com.

Why is this version 2.0 when I've never heard of version 1.0?

We created version 1.0 and began beta testing it. We quickly discovered that there were a number of important features we could add that would make the product much better. We planned to implement the new features right away, so rather than go through the release process twice in the space of a month, we decided to keep IMFilter under wraps until we were happy with version 2.0.
